NIJC Executive Director slams inhumane Biden asylum ban, suggests better solutions Fewer people arriving to seek asylum in the U.S. does not mean the Biden administration's asylum ban is positive for Chicago. NIJC, along with other organizations, is suing to block the new asylum ban that is inhumane and violates international and U.S. laws protecting people’s right to seek asylum. IN THE NEWS: In a letter to the Chicago Sun-Times, NIJC Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy reiterates that the asylum ban only places more people in danger. "Here is what has worked in Chicago: community members and legal and social services providers coming together, with support from the city and state governments, to develop creative solutions to humanely welcome newcomers,” McCarthy said. New report recounts abuse LGBTQ migrants face in detention NIJC, Human Rights First, and Immigration Equality have published a report detailing the accounts of 41 LGBTQ+ migrants who were detained by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and subjected to many forms of abuse while in detention facilities. IN THE NEWS: In an interview with Newsweek, NIJC Policy Director Nayna Gupta said LGBTQ+ migrants fleeing countries to escape severe violence should not face new dangers in the U.S. “Instead of providing refuge and safety, the United States subjects them to conditions in immigration detention facilities that aggravate their past trauma, neglect their medical needs, and expose them to discrimination and violence," Gupta said. NIJC celebrates Congressional resolution to help bring unjustly deported people home NIJC joined U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver to introduce the Chance to Come Home Resolution, which he co-sponsors with Representatives Adriano Espaillat and David Trone and Senator Cory Booker, and to show support for creating a central process for people who were unjustly deported from the U.S. to return home. “As threats of mass deportations make national headlines, this Chance to Come Home congressional resolution reminds us that deportation of people with years of life in the U.S. imposes irreparable damage to children, separates families and loved ones, and undermines the prosperity of U.S. communities,” said NIJC Director of Policy Nayna Gupta. “This would be a small, but powerful step toward bringing basic fairness to the immigration system and repairing the damage deportation has already inflicted on far too many U.S. families across the country.” Watch the full event recording and read our full statement here. |
