Power Mass Transit Events

Thursday, August 8 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm: Monthly Campaign Meeting

DSA-LA’s Power Mass Transit Campaign will meet regularly on the 2nd Thursday of every month. Join us to discuss our two prongs of Fund the LA Mobility Plan and Public Services #stationsneedstalls We’re always looking for comrades passionate about building a world-class public transit system that values riders and workers alike!

Sunday, August 11 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm: Public Bathrooms Canvass (San Fernando Valley)

Join us to talk to Metro riders and employees about funding better transit service, ensuring the promised public bathroom expansion guarantees free and permanent service, and lobbying for #nogigworkatMetro for service employees.

For the past few months, LA Metro has been running a public restroom pilot program at a few stations with a company called Throne Labs. So far, these restrooms have been used 13,500 times with zero incidents of misuse, successfully improving cleanliness at those stations.

Now, Metro is expanding to the program to 60+ bathrooms over the next four years. We need Metro to expand this vital public service while also ensuring the bathrooms are publicly owned, operated, and serviced by union employees. Join us as we talk to Metro riders and employees about urging Metro to take the findings from this successful pilot program and commit to building permanent restrooms and guaranteeing high-quality employment for the workers who service bathrooms.

Power to the Tenants: Events and Actions

Thursday, August 8 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Working Group Meeting

We will discuss updates, coordinate work from each of our subcommittees, and plan upcoming events.

Sunday, August 11 @ 10:30 am - 2:00 pm: State & Local Rent Control Tenant Canvassing

LA City Councilmember Tim McOsker in CD15 (at the southernmost end of the city near the Port of LA) is the deciding vote on whether or not the City of LA will pass stronger rent control this fall. We will be asking tenants to sign a petition for his support. We will also be spreading the word about our statewide ballot initiatives like the YES ON PROP 33 campaign (to repeal Costa-Hawkins and enable stronger rent control statewide).

This is a great event for new and experienced members alike! If you live in another council district we still need you– McOsker’s vote will affect rent control in every council district of the city.

Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO) Tabling:

We will be tabling at the Summer Night Lights event, telling renters about this crucial opportunity to win stronger rent control.

Canvass for our Candidates!

Karla Griego for LAUSD School Board

Karla is a parent, teacher, and activist who has been working and organizing at school sites, on picket lines, in town halls, and in the community to bring all of us together to win the schools that Los Angeles deserves. Get involved with our movement and come out and canvass with us!

Ysabel Jurado for LA City Council District 14

It’s finally here folks, the general election is in full swing. During the primary DSA-LA knocked on over 8000 doors in Eagle Rock. Thanks to our members, Ysabel Jurado was able to clinch a first place win in the primary. Now it’s time to get her over the finish line!

Jillian Burgos for LA City Council District 2

Jillian Burgos is a true grassroots socialist, serving her community as a NoHo neighborhood councilmember, housing and homelessness advocate, and essential healthcare worker. Frequently spotted on the picket lines with DSA-LA’s Snackpack, Jillian is keenly aware of just how powerful our presence is.  As an Afro-Latina woman from a working-class background, Burgos was CD-2’s biggest underdog, and the results of targeted canvassing blew us away in the primary. Outraised up to 12X by our opponents, she enlisted the help of volunteers in her community to knock on doors and spread hope for change in the Valley. Now, our people-powered candidate needs YOU to secure her seat at LA City Council. It’s time to end the status quo politics that have plagued our city for decades.
