59 years ago today, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law, expanding voting rights and ensuring that states followed the 15th Amendment’s guarantee that the right to vote would not be denied because of race. The Voting Rights Act did not take effect simply because of the stroke of a president's pen, but due to decades of tireless organizing and protesting by the American people.

And while the Voting Rights Act expanded voting rights, nearly 50 years later, the Supreme Court effectively gutted critical parts of the Voting Rights Act in its 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision, creating room for the voter suppression policies we see today. In 2024, our fight for voting rights continues.
