Dear reader,
By now, you probably know that Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to join her on the ticket as the vice presidential nominee. Over the past two weeks, Walz has emerged as a media darling, beloved by the Sunday shows and progressive posters alike. But at the Prospect, we write about policy, and we've been covering Walz's accomplishments for years.
This morning, David Dayen wrote about how Walz's impressive accomplishments as governor with an impossibly slim majority in the legislature-a one-seat majority in the state Senate, not much more in the House-mirror the elements of the Build Back Better agenda that didn't come to pass, elements that Kamala Harris has made a central part of her campaign [link removed]. While the vice presidency is not a governing role, Walz's experience first in the House and then as governor with the issues our country faces will be a real asset in a Harris-Walz administration.
A couple of weeks ago, Ryan Cooper made the case for Tim Walz as vice president [link removed]. Walz, he writes, brings together all factions of the Democratic Party, is good on television and had the best legislative record of any of the frontrunners.
Last year, Cooper also wrote about the Minnesota legislature's major accomplishments since 2022, when the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party won its first trifecta since 2014 [link removed]. With just a one-seat majority in the state Senate, they passed a major expansion of labor rights, paid family leave, legalized marijuana, abortion protections, gun control, free breakfast and lunch for all K-12 students and much more. It's a testament to how Democrats can use their leverage to pass popular policy that actually helps people.
Emma Murphy wrote about how in the aftermath of the Dobbs ruling, Minnesota effectively became the Midwest's abortion access center, passing legislation to protect the right to abortion and remove restrictions like a 24-hour waiting period and viability periods [link removed]. Walz's leadership on protecting the right to abortion bodes well for a campaign that is unafraid to make reproductive rights a highlight of their agenda.
