Since the coronavirus hit—and just when the Trump administration and
powerful corporations most need to be held accountable—news media
layoffs have gone through the roof.
It's not just local newspapers. Online news outlets, despite the
public's hunger for high-quality information, have seen staffing
reductions as well. For-profit news outlets rely on corporate
advertising revenue, but since the coronavirus pandemic exploded, this
ad revenue has largely dried up.
Common Dreams relies on a different model. As a nonprofit, we don't have
private equity investors demanding immediate returns. We have never
accepted any kind of advertising. And we have no paywalls. Instead, we
serve you—our readers—and in return, we rely on you for donations. It's
as simple as that.
But let's be frank: we are not immune from the economic crisis hitting
America. Many of our readers are among the millions of Americans who
have lost their jobs, and they may no longer be able to support us as
they once did.
This means that our current Spring Campaign is one of the most
precarious we've ever faced. Our work is more important than ever, and
we have more readers than ever. But we honestly have no idea how many of
our readers will be able to donate as they have in the past.
If you've lost a job and can't donate, please know that we
understand—and we will never block your access to Common Dreams with a
paywall or a subscription fee.

fortunate enough to work from home and are ok financially, consider
