Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | August 6, 2024 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) expresses profound concern over the recent surge in anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim riots across the United Kingdom. These violent protests erupted following a tragic stabbing incident on Monday, July 29, in Southport, England, which resulted in the death of three children and left 12 children and two adults in critical condition. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the affected families during this challenging time.
The suspect in this incident, 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana, has been misrepresented by extremist and neo-Nazi misinformation campaigns as a Muslim undocumented immigrant. In reality, Rudakubana was born in Wales to Christian Rwandan parents. This disinformation, proliferated through social media, has incited violent riots, leading to attacks on mosques, vehicle fires, assaults on law enforcement, and unchecked violence. MPAC extends its support to the Southport Islamic Society Mosque community and hopes the additional protections provided by the UK Home Office will ensure the safety of Muslim communities during this troubling period.
The rise in anti-Muslim sentiment over the past 10 months has created an atmosphere of fear among Muslims and those of Middle Eastern descent. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned the riots and attacks, affirming the right of all individuals to safety. However, MPAC urges further decisive action to protect vulnerable communities, irrespective of their faith.
MPAC remains dedicated to addressing the threats posed by domestic terrorism and white supremacy, which increasingly target all communities and undermine democracy. The dangerous spread of white supremacist ideologies continues to dehumanize and attack Muslim communities, inciting religious and race-based hatred and violence. The backlash against immigrants and Muslims poses a significant risk to other minority communities, particularly those perceived as Muslim or Arab. As we face a truly unprecedented election year here in the US, we must address how overlooking the threat of white supremacy ideologies also undermines our national security and contributes to the increasing political violence unfolding across the nation.
Our governments and leaders must implement firm measures and legislative reforms to combat extremism effectively. Protecting individuals of all backgrounds and securing places of worship is crucial. MPAC is committed to advocating for the human security of all, particularly those oppressed or targeted due to their faith, both at home and abroad.
