It wasn’t a gift to our communities; it was won through the tenacity of those who came before us, refusing to live another day in a nation that actively suppressed their voices.

Today marks 59 years since the historic Voting Rights Act was signed into law.

But we know it didn’t come easy.

Literacy tests.
Poll taxes.
Grandfather clauses.

Blatant voter suppression led thousands of people to march together in solidarity across Alabama, from Selma to Montgomery despite horrific violence from local law enforcement and white supremacist groups.

Americans all throughout the country watched the brutality Black Americans faced simply for wanting to exercise their right to vote.

The Voting Rights Act wasn’t a gift to our communities; it was won through the tenacity of those who came before us, refusing to live another day in a nation that actively suppressed their voices.

That’s why we celebrate the Voting Rights Act.
That’s why, in their honor, we recognize that we still have work to do.

In the last Presidential election, we saw just how far people are willing to go to silence historically unheard voices.

Do-it-yourself boxes placed all around in an attempt to imitate ballot drop boxes.
Ballot drop boxes being lit on fire, destroying over a hundred ballots.
Changes in polling locations without notifying voters.

Over half a century later, historically marginalized votes are still being suppressed.

It is our responsibility to remain vigilant and committed to equal voting rights for all of our communities.

We must continue this fight, together.

In solidarity and humility,
— Monica
