1) Left and Lefter

Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. He campaigned as the hard-left choice for VP, saying last week on the "White Dudes for Harris" call: "One person's socialism is another person's neighborliness."

Bernie Sanders had endorsed Walz for the VP slot, saying: "I hope very much that the vice president elects a running mate who will speak up and take on powerful corporate interests and I think Tim Walz is somebody who could do that."

He got his wish. Walz is a socialist like Bernie but without the charm. He was a lockdown artist governor who adopted a Cuomo-style must-admit nursing home policy, with more than 75 percent of first wave COVID deaths among the state's nursing home population. He locked kids out of school for more than half of the 2020-21 school year - and then lied about it:

Walz's state also has the dubious honor of hosting one of the biggest COVID relief fraud schemes.

On overall spending, Walz has been a Mini-Me following the Biden-Harris model. In 2022, he passed a two-year budget that featured a 38 percent increase in spending that raised taxes by $10 billion.

"It was the single most reckless fiscal step taken in the modern history of Minnesota," Jim Schultz, the President of the Minnesota Private Business Council, told us.

2) The Real Middle-Class President

Kamala's campaign theme is "Building up the middle class," which is ironic because no administration in recent times has done more to tear down the middle class than Biden-Harris.

Meanwhile, incomes under President  Trump for the middle class rose faster than under all the three previous presidents combined.

This is the official Census Bureau data. It even includes the COVID year 2020, or else Trump's number would have been well over $6,000.

3) Headline of the Day

Yes, soon it could be illegal to get rich. Taxation will soon be replaced by a rate of 100% on the evil rich. Get ready for outright confiscation. Take away the yacht. Take the home. Take the Ferrari. Take the money from the bank accounts.  Sounds like Cuba circa 1961.

We used to ignore these far out dingbat ideas, but given that Democrats have nominated the most liberal Senator in Congress to be their flag bearer, sometimes we wonder if any plan is too radical for this crew.

4) Pelosi: Put Biden on Mount Rushmore

Nancy Pelosi declared to CBS News that President Biden should be added to Mount Rushmore. So the president with the worst economic record in modern times (see above) is to be enshrined right next to Washington and Jefferson.

The former House Speaker was, of course, instrumental in the coup that pushed Biden off the Democratic ticket in favor of Kamala Harris. But unlike Mark Antony's funeral oration of Caesar, she came to the CBS interview to praise Biden not to bury him.

"Such a consequential president of the United States," she gushed. "A Mount Rushmore kind of president of the United States."

5) Manufacturing Is Already in a Mild Recession

We are NOT rushing out of the gate predicting recession as so many economists did at the start of 2023 only to get egg in their faces.  The U.S. economy is admirably resilient and technology is making everything more abundant.

However, the manufacturing sector is already negative and has been for several months.

This chart from InterMarket Forecasting Inc. shows that downturns in manufacturing are often early stage signs of overall recession:

Here is a companion of government jobs versus manufacturing jobs. Lately we've become a nation of takers, not makers:
