On Instagram recently, someone asked if I could shed some light on what
the selection process for the Vice Presidential nominee might look like
right now.

I won’t speak to the current process because of the first point that I’ll
make: the VP selection process — unlike the Presidential selection
process, which is very public facing — is often a very personal, private
decision.

It starts with your Presidential nominee trying to figure out what they
prioritize in a Vice President. There’s a lot of things that need to be
balanced: what is going to be electorally successful, but also what kind
of governance partner do you want?

I would imagine that someone like VP Harris, having served as a Vice
President, is taking this decision very, very seriously in a lot of
different dimensions.

Another thing to consider is that, once you do get some finalists, those
people will go through some of the most rigorous vetting and opposition
research known to man. That is done to know every single vulnerability
that the other side might exploit, to either (if it’s bad) filter you out
or (if you’re selected) prepare for.

But sometimes, the VP selection sends a message.

President Biden, for example, served in the Senate for decades. He really,
really valued the importance of mastering the Senate, and understood the
importance of having a governing partner who mastered the Senate, in order
to help pass legislation. I think his selection of VP Harris communicates
that.

President Trump’s selection of J.D. Vance, for example, indicates and
communicates to the public that they hate women.

a message, and that President Trump's selection of J.D. Vance is
communicating to the public that Republicans hate women.

The cynics say that we must resign ourselves to a Trump-Vance White
House. They will tell you one vote won't change anything. But change
isn't up the cynics — it's up to us.

to combat the MAGA movement, right-wing extremists will endanger
marginalized communities and our democracy itself.
