The Case for Pragmatic Socialism

Over the past decade, the United States has had a resurgence of the left not seen in this country since the 1960s. At the same time, income inequality is staggeringly high both in America and around the world. It is howling injustice for a handful of oligarchs to control nation-state-sized hoards of wealth while millions go hungry. To win a better world and build a society that works for everyone, it’s clear socialists have their work cut out for them.

But what would a successful democratic socialist tradition in America actually look like? For our August issue, Ryan Cooper draws on the distinctly American philosophical tradition of pragmatism and the social democratic policies of the Nordic countries to map out how socialism can function here and what our institutions would look like. With a vibrant labor movement, a proper welfare state, a rebuilt regulatory state and the democratization of property, he argues, socialists can fight for an agenda that America can accept.
