Friend — We’ve taken a big first step towards finally passing legislation to protect kids online.

Last week the Senate passed Ed’s Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act 2.0 (COPPA 2.0) bill. This bill builds on the original COPPA law that Ed authored in 1998 during his time in the House.

With this vote, the Senate has sent a powerful message to Big Tech that the days of indiscriminately tracking and targeting children and teens are over, and that their privacy-invasive business model must change.

The bill bans targeted advertising to children and teens, prohibits platforms from collecting personal information from teens without their consent, and establishes data minimization rules to limit the collection of their data.

We are suffering a youth mental health crisis fueled in part by Big Tech’s business practices that put profits over our young people. It’s time we put into place better protections to counter the trillion-dollar platforms who are looking for every last way to keep kids and teens on their app.

We appreciate your support as Ed continues to make progress on critical issues like these in the Senate.

In solidarity,

Team Markey
