Friend, this is crunch-time. We now have more applications than we can support with our Writers’ Emergency Fund. Will you consider bolstering the Fund today with a gift? Even $25 would help pay an electric bill, purchase groceries, or buy medicine for writers who are in desperate need.
Writers and journalists are the conscience—and consciousness—of our world. Please support them at this perilous time.
All the best,
Jennifer Egan

Dear Friend,
If you hadn’t heard already, PEN America has expanded the Writers’ Emergency Fund, providing critical financial assistance to writers who are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Will you consider a gift to the Fund today?

We’ve received more than 600 applications for the Fund, and the stories are wrenching. Editors and freelancers have lost contracts; TV shows and studios are dark; bookstore jobs have vanished; side gigs at restaurants, bars, and hotels are evaporating.
Believe me, I know that writers are used to just getting by. But this is something new and unprecedented. As the crisis persists, these writers don’t know when or how they’ll get back on their feet.
The Writers’ Emergency Fund is an economic lifeline for them. The Fund provides immediate assistance to those who need it most. And with the number of applicants growing each day, we need your help to keep the fund running. If we don’t get enough support by week’s end, we’ll need to start turning away new applicants.

There’s no telling where things will go next. But we do know that in times of crisis, PEN America is here. Please consider a gift today (and if you’ve already given, thank you!).
Thank you,
Joyce Carol Oates
PS - The newly enacted federal CARES Act increases the tax deductibility of donations, whether you itemize or not. Thank you for being generous!
