Tomorrow, we celebrate 59 years of the Voting Rights Act.
The VRA outlawed discrimination at the ballot box and protected every American’s right to vote no matter their race, gender, or religion. I personally fought for the passage of the act as a civil rights activist during the ‘60s alongside people like my dear friend the late Congressman John Lewis.
In the intervening 59 years since its passage, the VRA has been gutted and we’ve seen modern-day voter suppression tactics -- from voter roll purges to extreme ID requirements -- take hold across the country, silencing Americans’ voices in our government.
And recently, Donald Trump told a group of his supporters that if they vote to elect him this November, then “in four years, you don’t have to vote again.”
We’re at a crossroads for the future of our democracy, John.
That’s not an exaggeration -- Trump has, in his own words, threatened voting rights, our elections, and our democracy. We must do all we can to protect every American’s sacred right to vote -- and that includes helping Vice President Kamala Harris defeat Trump and helping Democrats across the country win their races, too.

There were many obstacles that stood in our way during the Civil Rights Movement, but we never gave up. We saw our fight through to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the VRA into law.
I’m not giving up now, either, and I hope you won’t either, John.
Please contribute and support our efforts to elect Democrats at every level who will protect our voting rights and honor our democratic values as Americans.
Thank you,
Jim
