It’s National Farmers Market Week!

National Farmers Market Week is an annual celebration that highlights the vital role farmers markets play in our nation’s food system. At Hunger Free America, we have long advocated for farmers markets throughout the country to accept SNAP and WIC benefits.

Make sure to follow us on social media this week to learn more about how accepting SNAP and WIC at farmers markets not only increases healthy options, but helps grow the local economy!

Spreading the Word about Summer EBT

In July, Hunger Free America joined Congressman Tom Suozzi at the Queens County Farm Museum farmstand to promote the new Summer EBT program (also known as SUN Bucks.) Summer EBT is a grocery benefit available across most of the U.S. Families with eligible school-aged children can get $120 per child to buy groceries during the summer.

Families can receive Summer EBT on top of other benefits like SNAP and WIC, and children can continue to enjoy free Summer Meals from local meal sites.

9/11 Week of Service

Based on our MLK Serve-a-thon, which we've been hosting for 20+ years, we invite you to participate in our new 9/11 Week of Service, with in-person and virtual opportunities across the country, including educational events. 9/11 is a federally designated day of service in honor of those lost on 9/11, and those who responded. Join us for events Sept 11th through the 15th.

Volunteer Spotlight

Last month students from Yale University joined Hunger Free America at our Bronx, NY office to learn about the fight against hunger and help us spread the word about SNAP and WIC. They also had the chance to meet Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.

Advocacy Corner: Fight for SNAP

Earlier this year, the House Agriculture Committee advanced a Farm Bill proposal that would, according to the Congressional Budget Office, take away $30 billion in SNAP funding. Hunger Free America fiercely opposes this proposal, which would take away life-saving nutrition assistance from tens of millions of food insecure children, working people, veterans, people with disabilities, and older Americans.

We urge you to contact your House Representative and US Senator and implore them to reject any Farm Bill that cuts SNAP funding!
