This morning, I’m testifying in a pivotal case to guarantee the fairness of our courts in Mississippi.

Filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Mississippi, Southern Poverty Law Center, and the New York-based law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, this lawsuit seeks to rectify the lack of representation for Black voters in Mississippi’s Supreme Court districts. Currently, all three districts are majority-white, and they were last updated in 1987 despite objections from Black legislators.

Current districts violate the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution by diluting Black voting strength. Mississippi, where approximately 38% of our population is Black, has seen only four Black justices serve on its Supreme Court, never more than one at a time. The current court consists of eight white justices and one Black justice, underscoring the disparities highlighted in the lawsuit.

As a candidate for the U.S. Senate, I am committed to ensuring that every Mississippian's voice is heard, their vote is counted, and they feel valued whenever they go to the ballot box. Our Supreme Court should reflect the diversity of our state, and it is imperative that we address these disparities to uphold the principles of democracy and equality.

I’m running because the fight for Mississippians extends beyond our state’s borders. I’m ready to work for bipartisan solutions on issues like fair districts and voting laws at the federal level.
