The Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, known as Black Wall Street, was once a thriving hub of Black businesses and homes.
On May 31, 1921, this vibrant community was devastated by a violent white mob, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of thousands of people. This tragic event obliterated what was the wealthiest Black community in America, with effects that have reverberated through generations.
The time is past due to honor Black Wall Street as a national monument. This recognition is essential to celebrate Black excellence and entrepreneurship and to confront and acknowledge the enduring racism in our country.
Please urge President Biden to invoke the Antiquities Act and designate Black Wall Street as a national monument today.
