### **Good Tourist. Enjoy Your Free Beer.**
This month, the city of Copenhagen took another step towards creating a culture of dependency by announcing its plan to bribe tourists into behaving responsibly during their trips. The so-called "sustainability initiative" aims to lure visitors into making eco-friendly choices - such as using public transport - by offering them perks and discounts.
According to Paloma Zapata, CEO of Sustainable Travel International, "tourists want to feel good about doing something sustainable without feeling ashamed." One can't help but wonder if Ms. Zapata has ever heard of personal responsibility or individual choice? Do we really need governments and NGOs holding our hands every step of the way?
It's no secret that many on the left believe people cannot be trusted to make decisions on their own and must therefore be incentivized (read: bribed) into acting according to someone else's moral standards. This approach reeks of paternalism and undermines genuine environmental efforts.
Copenhagen offers a variety of incentives for free beer. They even have a program that if a tourist turns in a bag of trash to the visitor center, a token is given that can be used for a beer (or a coffee or an ice cream cone).
