$35,059,402,347,141 | Bidenomics Isn’t Working

Last week, our national debt surpassed $35 trillion for the first time ever. This has devastating consequences for future generations and is already negatively affecting taxpayers and our economy. In order to change our dangerous trajectory, we need more taxpayers to be knowledgeable about how this crisis is affecting them.

Recently, House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) and I introduced legislation informing taxpayers of their share of the national debt, which is now more than $200,000 per taxpayer. The Debt Per Taxpayer Information Act would show the true cost to our country by requiring the IRS to display the total federal government revenue, outlays, and deficit; the total gross federal debt; and an estimate of the debt for taxpayers on their annual W-2 tax forms.

It's a hopeful sign that this legislation passed out of the House Budget Committee by an overwhelmingly bipartisan majority, and I look forward to seeing it move forward. A $35 trillion debt is simply unsustainable.

.New jobs data was released last week, and it confirms what we’ve long known – Bidenomics isn't working. Kansas families are paying too much for gas, groceries and housing, and now unemployment is creeping up again. Fewer jobs than expected were added to the economy in July and the unemployment rate, against expectations, climbed to 4.3%. The Biden-Harris administration is again failing the American people in another key metric.

Headline: The Strategic Petroleum Reserve

.After draining 180 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) for political purposes, the Biden-Harris administration has left the SPR under-resourced for months – jeopardizing our national security. Last month, however, the administration announced that they purchased 40 million barrels and canceled the sale of another 140 million barrels, claiming that these efforts make up for the missing 180 million barrels.

While I'm glad that 40 million barrels have been purchased as a start, canceling the sale of barrels is not the same as fully replenishing the outstanding 140 million barrels. The Biden-Harris administration should proceed to purchase the remaining outstanding barrels to ensure our national security, and never again use it as a political ploy.

.Did you know that there is a townsite under El Dorado Lake? Chelsea, Kansas, was settled in 1857 in Butler County because of its fertile land and access to water. Yet throughout its history, the town grappled with low population and moved locations twice. In the 1870s, a major drought prompted many of Chelsea’s residents to leave. In the 1900s, the town struggled to grow, and in 1978, it was dissolved for the purposes of the El Dorado Lake Project. Chelsea was subsequently completely covered with water.
