My Thoughts on the Recent Prisoner Swap & the Urgent Need to Free Ryan Corbett

After enduring years as political prisoners under a cruel regime, we are all eager to welcome these Americans and many other innocent prisoners home.

However, this lopsided prisoner swap sets a dangerous precedent, placing innocent American citizens at risk of being used as bargaining chips in exchange for dangerous criminals. This not only appeases malicious actors but endangers Americans traveling or living abroad. I am also particularly concerned about the dangerous criminals being released in exchange for innocent Americans; these individuals include convicted hackers, murderers, and Russian spies.

Additionally, I urge the Biden administration to continue working diligently to bring home all Americans held unjustly abroad, including my constituent Ryan Corbett, who has been unjustly detained by the Taliban since August 10, 2022.

Should Biological Men be Allowed to Compete in Women's Sports?

The International Olympic Committee is allowing biological men, Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, to compete in the 2024 Olympics despite previously failing gender eligibility tests.

In one instance, Khelif caused the woman he was competing against in boxing to drop out after just 46 seconds due to the severe pain of being hit by a biological male. This is not only dangerous but unfair and deprives the biological women who worked their entire lives for this moment a fair shot at the gold.

That's why I support legislation like the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which ensures that biological females are not forced to compete against biological men in women's competitive sports funded through Title IX.

Should biological men be allowed to compete in women's sports?

As your representative in Congress, my top priority is championing legislative initiatives that benefit you and your families. Each week, I review numerous bills and letters, engaging in thorough discussions with members of our community to determine which actions to support and address your needs. Below are some of the bills I recently cosponsored.

H.R. 6479 – To limit the availability of a plea deal for any person responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 – This bill would require the President to direct the Attorney General to refuse any plea deal for any individual responsible for the 9/11 terrorist if that plea deal would avoid a public trial or preclude the death penalty. The Department of Justice recently entered into a deal with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin Attash and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al-Hawsawi, three masterminds behind the 9/11 attack, that would remove the death penalty from consideration at sentencing. This is an absolute travesty of justice and these individuals should receive the death penalty for their heinous crimes.

The Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act of 2024 – This bill would prohibit states from levying any additional excise taxes on firearms or ammunition. Excise taxes are frequently levied on goods like cigarettes or alcohol, however states should not be levying additional financial burdens on law-abiding gunowners exercising their Second Amendment rights. California has already levied an additional 11% excise tax on firearms and ammunition, and New York could soon follow.

H.R. 7667, the Making Agricultural Products Locally Essential (MAPLE) Act – This bill would add maple syrup to the eligible products under the Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), which gives low-income seniors access to locally grown produce and agricultural products.

Standing alongside NY-24 Volunteer Firefighters in Calling for OSHA to Reconsider Burdensome Regulations

NY-24 depends on volunteer firefighters to keep our community safe, putting their lives on the line to save others. We must ensure they are not hampered by burdensome and costly regulations that could lead to closures or limited access to emergency services in our rural communities.

I joined Niagara County Legislators Anthony Nemi, Shawn Foti, and Christopher McKimmie, President of FASNY Edward Tase, Jr., Niagara County Director of Emergency Services and Fire Coordinator Jonathan Schultz, and numerous local volunteer firefighters to call on the OSHA to reconsider expanding regulations that threaten the closure of volunteer fire departments across New York.

Thank you to these outstanding volunteer firefighters from our community who joined me at the South Lockport Fire Company Station to voice our opposition to these 22 additional rules that would burden our local fire departments.

I will continue advocating against these regulations and work to ensure our rural and volunteer fire departments have the resources they need.

Calling for a Presidential Emergency Declaration for the State of New York

On July 15th and 16th, severe weather across fifteen New York counties caused significant damage and hardship for countless New Yorkers, including over 400,000 power outages. This includes communities in Genesee, Jefferson, Oswego, and Ontario counties, which are located within NY-24.

This week, I joined Representatives Brandon Williams, Paul Tonko, Nick Langworthy, and Elise Stefanik in sending a letter to President Biden to urge him to promptly issue a Presidential Emergency Declaration for the State of New York to ensure our communities receive the federal assistance needed for recovery and rebuilding.

Constituent Casework Success Story: Delivering Results for NY-24

A constituent recently reached out about ongoing difficulties with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regarding his late father's tax return and refund. Our team worked diligently to ensure he received his father's tax return. We received the following message upon the conclusion of his case:

"Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and her staff did a great job acting in my behalf with my late fathers 2022 tax return. The IRS took 14 months to process the amended return and was unresponsive to my multiple request to process the return. I appreciate the efforts of Congresswoman Tenney who I believe helped me put this matter to rest."

No matter the issue, I will always be an advocate for my constituents! If you need assistance with a federal agency, please be sure to call us today.
