Artificial intelligence (commonly known as AI) has the power to revolutionize technology and the world around us. But it has major risks for our environment.
AI is already limiting the effect of clean energy policies and slowing the pace of U.S. emission reduction. As one example, Google’s emissions shot up by 48% over the last five years after infusing AI throughout many of their products — making it harder to achieve our climate goals.
Thanks to the Biden/Harris administration, we have made significant progress in the fight against climate change. But AI threatens to take us backwards.
Not only do we need to be replacing existing fossil fuel emissions with clean energy, but we also need to be building more renewables and clean energy to meet the future demands of AI, because if we don’t, we’ll be forced to rely on fossil fuels for much longer.
The problem is some members of Congress don’t even know what AI is, let alone how it’s going to impact our climate and what we need to do to protect our environment. That’s why it has never been more important to elect SEEC climate leaders who know these issues inside and out!
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
