Dear John,

This week, following a murderous attack upon innocent Druze children by Hezbollah, we demanded Minister Mélanie Joly issue an unambiguous condemnation of the Iran-sponsored terrorist organization – and we were successful. We have consulted closely with law enforcement agencies across Canada in the wake of a series of frightening antisemitic attacks, and we have called for legislation similar to that of other Western democracies to outlaw the glorification of terrorism.

The problem of home-grown radicalization – a disturbing trend in Canada that can no longer be ignored – begins with those who blatantly celebrate terrorism, publicly promote terror organizations, and proudly display their associated symbols. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government must do more to safeguard Canadian society.

Join us in calling on the Public Safety Minister and his department to review Samidoun’s activities, to add them to Canada’s Listed Terrorist Entities, and to make it illegal to glorify terrorism by displaying symbols of terrorist organizations.

Since October 8, 2023, the Iran-proxy Hezbollah has launched more than 6,000 rockets, missiles, and drones from Lebanon into Israel, displacing 100,000 people living in northern Israel. On July 27, 2024, during a 100-rocket barrage, 11 Arabic-speaking Druze children died when a rocket hit the soccer pitch they were playing on in the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights. A 30-year-old Israeli <[link removed]> was also killed.

Following this heinous attack by Hezbollah, Canada’s Foreign Minister failed to condemn the perpetrators. While she did eventually call Hezbollah out <[link removed]> for their terror attacks against innocent Israeli civilians, her statement came only after we pressured her <[link removed]> for failing to identify not only the terrorist perpetrator but also the target of the attack: Israel.

In the days that have followed, Israel targeted and killed the Hezbollah commander believed responsible in Beirut. Later in the week, an explosion inside a guest bedroom where Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was staying in Tehran eliminated the terrorist leader <[link removed]>. There is no doubt these incidents have helped secure and safeguard the global community from these terrorists, but with retaliation from both groups against Israel likely, both Israel and Jewish communities across the Diaspora must exercise heightened vigilance.

Please report any incidents of hate and antisemitism you witness or experience in Canada to your local law enforcement and to CIJA here <[link removed]>.

This past week in Canada, the escalation of extremism and violent Jew-hatred has manifested in the defacing, with pro-Hamas graffiti <[link removed]>, of a Jewish school and synagogue along the path of the Calgary community’s annual Walk with Israel; and, in Toronto, in the torching of Jewish community signs at two synagogues <[link removed]>. On Wednesday, the RCMP also stopped <[link removed]> an ISIS-inspired attack on Canadian soil.

CIJA will continue to work with Canadian Federations and liaise with law enforcement agencies to ensure that Jewish communities from coast to coast remain safe.

Unlike the UK, France, and Spain, Canada has no laws against glorifying terrorism. In a Le Journal de Montreal op-ed <[link removed]>, CIJA Quebec's Director, Policy and Research Emmanuelle Amar and Associate Director of Communications and Media Relations Julien Corona explore the gaps in Canada’s Criminal Code that allow the glorification of terrorism to run rampant on Canadian streets and the rationale behind our urgent advocacy, for the sake of all Canadians, to add it immediately to anti-terrorism laws.
