A PERSONAL NOTE

??

Okay, I'm going to voice some opinions today that some folks may find strange, but bear with me. (Is it the post-surgical meds?)

I was sitting here scrolling on Instagram the other day and decided that maybe we're selling two entire generations short.

I'm talking about Gen Z and Millenials.

They're so often the butt of ridicule that I think people are missing some of the things I find incredibly cool about the young folks of this era.

I had this discussion last week with my daughters - one is in the very last year of Millenials, and the other is squarely in the middle of Gen Z.

I love that these generations aren't afraid to be unusual. I love that they enjoy comforting hobbies like knitting, walking in the woods, and reading books. I love that they march to the beats of their own drummers - when I was in my early 20s, my love for crocheting was my deep, dark "old lady" secret. But today, young people openly embrace these hobbies as "quirky," and they have no problem if everybody knows it.

Honestly, a lot of folks in the range of 20-30 have a ton of old-fashioned skills. One of my daughters is teaching her friends how to make and can homemade jam. You could chalk that skill up to her being my daughter, but what about all the friends she has who want to learn? She and her friends go hiking and take nature photos. They forage. They identify rocks and mushrooms.

They aren't all glued to their phones nonstop and sometimes the things they're scrolling are things we'd also find interesting. While I'm not a personal fan of TikTok, my younger daughter follows a bunch of content creators who do beautiful, artistic things. She follows others who show her ideas for cooking on a budget. Still others are great for DIYs for her beautiful apartment which she loves to decorate and make cozy and inviting.

Many of the young people of these generations are homebodies who'd rather curl up with a mug of herbal tea and a novel than go out dancing to the newest bar and drinking until they're sick. They're in touch with their mental health, and they focus on their own well-being in ways we were never taught to do. I like that they are not afraid to be who they are and that they don't care about "cool."

They're not perfect - no generation is. But they're not nearly as bad as society makes them out to be.

Now, obviously, every generation has its problems and its annoying habits. Mine did, and so did yours. Our parents before us annoyed their parents with the rock and roll music they played. And before that, I'm sure the younger generations had other newfangled modern ways to irk their parents and cause the older generation to shake their heads in despair.

So, while there are a lot of things about this generation that I don't understand and probably never will, I think there's still a great deal to admire about them. Maybe their quirkiness, independence, and love of coziness are things we should consider focusing on instead of all the things we disagree with.

I learn something every day from my Millenial kid and my Gen Z kid. If you look at them without the lens of disapproval, you just might find that the younger generations are pretty darn cool.
