Absurd, ridiculous, ludicrous -- McConnell-ish.

I was shocked, along with my fellow Republican and Democratic governors, when Mitch McConnell said we should let the states go bankrupt -- justifying his stance that Congress shouldn't assist states in their response to the coronavirus pandemic.

You might call it ridiculous to say that. Some might call it ludicrous. Or you might call it McConnell-ish. It was a very McConnell-ish thing to say, to let states go bankrupt. This isn't about red or blue. It's about supporting the small businesses and the front-line workers who are the backbone of our country.

We should all be putting people over politics right now -- but Mitch McConnell's comments show congressional Republicans only want politics as usual. If you believe like I do that there's no such thing as red states or blue states in a pandemic, add your name next to mine to condemn Mitch McConnell's comments right now.

Leadership in D.C. has said they are the backup, and states should lead. Well, Washington has -- and it's time for the federal government to support the states.

We have states, both Republican and Democratic, who are doing the best they can to make sure people have food and public safety and health care.

I hope Congress will come to its senses and Senate Majority Leader McConnell will do the right thing because states going bankrupt would devastate local communities and cut important services we all depend on. Destroying our public safety, public health, transportation, education, and other systems would only bring additional pain to everyone during this difficult time.
