The United States Postal Service is in danger, John.
It’s been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic -- and Donald Trump has so far refused to help even though Congress passed 10 BILLION dollars in aid directly for the USPS.
Now Trump’s Treasury Department is using the crisis to try to take control of the Post Office’s operations.
According to a new report from the Washington Post, if this plan goes through: “a slew of Postal Service management decisions, including the terms of major contracts and collective bargaining strategy, could require Treasury’s approval.” That would destroy the Postal Service as we know it.
The United States Postal Service is an integral and indispensable part of American life. We’re dependent on the US Postal Service for essential medicine, supplies, and the ability to safely conduct our elections by mail.
Trump’s plan would destroy the USPS as we know it. Congress must act quickly to prevent its hostile takeover by Trump’s Treasury Department. Add your name to our petition if you agree >>
While Trumps wants no strings attached loans for his favorite industries, like airlines, fossil fuels, and his friends on Wall Street, he’s ordered his administration to delay and demand when it comes to the U.S. Post Office.
Here’s the thing, the Post Office provides an essential service used by millions of Americans to receive the medicine, supplies, and in many states election ballots. Not only that, but the USPS can deliver mail cheaply because of its universal delivery infrastructure. That’s why it can charge so much less than UPS or Fed Ex keeping affordable access for the poor while still delivering to rural communities the for-profit competitors won’t.
But Trump says the USPS’s funding problem is the business model. That they just need to charge higher prices and it won't go under. That's false.
The reality is the Postal Service's budget issues are due to a requirement Congress and the Bush Administration imposed on the USPS to fund their retirees’ health care 75 years in advance. That’s just ridiculous.
Congress can fix this problem by taking implementation of USPS emergency funding from the Treasury or passing explicit requirements that tie the Trump administration’s hands and force them to comply -- ironically, much like what Trump is trying to do to the USPS.
The bottom line is we can’t let Trump’s Treasury Department extortion tactics work on one of the most important and needed essential services the government provides.

Thanks for raising your voice to save the US Postal Service. A hostile takeover by Trump would destroy the Postal Service, but we can stop them if we all work together.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and keep fighting to win.
