John, I'm blown away by you.
Thanks to the generosity of more than 94,000 people like you, along with special gifts from partners like Blue Meridian Partners, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Open Society Foundations, we have raised over $19 million to support domestic workers through our Coronavirus Care Fund -- nearly five times the original goal we set in mid-March.
I'm stunned.
Thousands of in-home care workers, nannies, and house cleaners have already received support from the fund, and we have another 30,000 inquiries we're working our way through as fast as we can.
Every single gift to the Care Fund provides desperately needed relief. It means putting food on the table, making rent, and paying medical expenses. It means surviving this crisis.
Alicia C. in Atlanta, Georgia said:
"I have three kids -- all with pre-existing conditions -- that I'm now homeschooling. I'm not able to nanny or drive for Lyft at all, so I'm just at home.
This fund has been a big break for me and my children. I've gotten emotional support, not just financial support from being checked-on by NDWA. I used the money from the fund to catch up on bills and get some groceries for my family. I'm so grateful."
Domestic workers are on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus. They are the nannies caring for children so that their parents can go to work in medical centers, they are home-care workers keeping loved ones who are elderly comfortable and safe in their homes so they are not exposed to the virus, and they are helping to clean homes -- and hospitals -- to keep them sanitized and safe for everyone.
Thanks to kind, compassionate people like you we will continue to provide as much assistance as possible, to as many domestic workers as possible. You, like the domestic workers you're supporting, are heroes.
It's important to also keep in mind, even with these efforts, we won't be able to help every domestic worker in this country. We can't replace a strong safety net.
We also need our federal, state, and local legislators to enact policy change that protects and supports this group of workers. That is why we will continue to push our legislators to protect ALL workers from the economic impacts of this public-health crisis.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your support means more than you'll ever know.
How we take care of each other will be what we remember from the coronavirus pandemic. Women like Alicia will remember your care.
Sincerely,
Ai-jen Poo, Executive Director
