In early March, over 40 local and statewide organizations launched the JusticeLA COVID-19 Response (JLA COVID-19) ([link removed]) . This coalition of community organizations and leaders, including Dignity & Power Now ([link removed]) , came together to address the health crisis unfolding by creating a comprehensive policy to mitigate the spread of the disease in the L.A. County jail population.

Unfortunately, the leadership of L.A. County have not met our demands and we have been forced to proceed with filing a federal multi-pronged Class Action lawsuit against Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for failure to adequately protect the lives and safety of persons incarcerated within Los Angeles County Jail system from COVID-19.

Dignity & Power Now and Youth Justice Coalition, along with nine currently incarcerated individuals, are the Plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Our lawsuit is significant and noteworthy because L.A. County has the largest jail system in the world. The outcome of this litigation will set precedent and have enormous reverberations around the world.
