Governor Walz highlights increased penalties for straw purchases

On Thursday, Governor Walz and public safety officials highlighted legislation that increases criminal penalties for straw purchases of firearms that took effect on August 1. This legislation builds on Governor Walz’s work to strengthen gun safety in Minnesota, including expanding background checks and establishing a red flag law.

*"At school, students should feel hopeful, inspired, and cared for – not afraid,"* said Governor Walz. *"**Last year, we enacted a red flag law and strengthened background checks. Today, we raised the criminal penalty for straw purchasing guns. We’re taking meaningful action to keep our kids safe."*

Governor Walz announced that Minnesotans in 19 counties working to recover from this year’s flooding can now request individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help recover from losses they suffered. The declaration will provide resources to reimburse individuals and communities for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repair and replacement of damaged infrastructure.

*"Minnesotans’ homes, belongings, and family businesses were devastated by flooding this summer, and we aren’t stopping until they get the support they need to recover. This assistance is going to make a world of a difference for the individuals and businesses that were impacted,"* said Governor Walz. *"I’m grateful to our partners in the federal government for their continued commitment to our recovery efforts, and to the Minnesotans who carefully documented the extent of this damage."*
