Today is my 28th Birthday!
In my community making it to 28 is never guaranteed. So, although it is an important day in my life, celebrating is difficult. While I celebrate my birthday, thousands of people in my district (New York’s 5th Congressional district) continue to suffer.
Hundreds of businesses have closed their doors for good. Thousands of folks have lost their jobs. People can’t get groceries or other supplies because they don’t have proper PPE. People are not getting the unemployment checks they so desperately need, and the “stimulus” checks, being barely enough to cover rent in my community, are long gone.
For years my opponent, Gregory Meeks, has allowed finance firms and real estate companies to buy working families out of their homes in return for campaign contributions. NY-5 already has some of the highest rate of home foreclosure in the country, and now when this crisis threatens to drastically exacerbate the situation, Meeks is silent.
Well, I'm not.
What I want for my birthday is a federally subsidized rent freeze. I want a complete mortgage freeze, with zero percent interest for the remainder of 2020. I want $2,000 monthly checks sent to everyone. I want federal protections for workers that includes mandatory hire back programs for massive corporations. Most of all, I want the people in my community to have the support they need to survive and right now, they don’t.
As the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have become a reality, our Community Care Outreach program is more important than ever. With Hundreds of people are signing up to receive supplies and resources, we are becoming overwhelmed. Our ability to distribute supplies remains strong, but increased need has made it difficult to financially support the program.
