Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Five years ago, we came together to envision the future of housing in our city. We talked about the challenges we were facing and how we would overcome them. We knew, in DC and as a region, that we needed to do more to create housing. There is a lot that goes into driving down the cost of housing, and one critical piece is also one of the simplest ideas: you need more housing. Especially in world-class cities like DC — where more people want to live — as demand goes up, you must increase your housing supply.

That’s why, when I came into office, I doubled our annual investment in the Housing Production Trust Fund. That’s why we looked at how many homes we had produced between 2010 and 2019, and we said: we can double that too. And that’s why, five years ago, we set an ambitious goal: to add 36,000 new homes in Washington, DC by 2025.

But we didn’t just set a goal. We also invested more than $1.3 billion in the Housing Production Trust Fund. We kept building through the pandemic. We made DC a national leader in creating affordable housing targets by neighborhood. And by sticking together — community leaders, affordable housing providers, care providers, developers, architects, DOB inspectors, DHCD employees, and so many others — this week, we hit our goal.

The 36,216 new homes we’ve built since 2019 span all eight wards and are home to 65,000 DC residents. And by adding more homes, we’ve been able to blunt what’s happened to the price of housing nationwide — over the past five years, the cost of housing in DC has grown at half the rate of housing costs nationwide.

We are a leader in the region when it comes to housing. Washington, DC is home to 12% of the region’s population, and over the last five years, we’ve produced about 31% of all new homes in the region and 81% of new deeply affordable homes in the region. And next year, we expect to hit our goal of adding 12,000 new affordable homes.

Most of all, I want to say thank you to DC residents. Our community is committed to affordable housing, and when projects get tough, Washingtonians stand up and fight for it. Thank you for your trust and support, and let’s keep pushing.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
