Every day, the influence of women in the labor movement continues to grow. Since 2021, we've seen a notable rise in the number of women joining trade unions and apprenticeship programs. This momentum is reflected at the highest levels of leadership: for the first time in history, the AFL-CIO is led by a woman president. Here in the Arizona AFL-CIO, we are proud to have multiple women serving as union leaders, and we may soon have the opportunity to elect our first woman president. 

We are excited about a new initiative to establish a Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) Organization in the state of Arizona. Endorsed by the AFL-CIO and its international and national unions, CLUW is a nonpartisan group dedicated to empowering union members through education, advocacy, and support. CLUW provides a unique platform for union members to connect, share experiences, and work towards common goals.

At its founding convention in Chicago, Illinois, CLUW adopted four core goals: to promote affirmative action in the workplace; to strengthen the role of women in unions; to organize unorganized women; and to increase women's involvement in the political and legislative process. These goals remain the foundation of CLUW's activities, as members advocate for equal pay, child and elder care benefits, job security, safe workplaces, affordable healthcare, contraceptive equity, and protection from sexual harassment and violence at work.

Importantly, CLUW membership is open to all union members, regardless of gender. This inclusive organization welcomes anyone committed to advancing the interests of working families and promoting equality in the workplace.

Make a Donation to the San Carlos Apache Tribe 

On July 10th the Watch Fire broke out, buring 2,162 acres on the San Carlos Apache Reservation; leaving hundreds of people to evacuate, homes destroyed and residents homeless.  Now that the fire has been contained, families are still impacted. If you feel inclined to help, any contribution, no matter the size can make a significant difference in helping these families rebuild and recover.

Join the Maricopa County Young Democrats, Tempe Union High School District and help give back to the community by providing necessary resources to students and giving parents one less thing to worry about. 100% of the contributions will go towards acquiring sneakers for schoolchildren from Pre-K to Highschool.

National COSH - Demand Heat Justice Petition 

Workers are falling ill and dying at alarming rates due to heat illness. Extreme heat causes as many as 2,000 worker fatalities in the U.S. each year, and up to 170,000 workers are injured in heat stress-related accidents annually.

CWA District 3 Rallies in Atlanta for AT&T Southeast Bargaining

"Wages and scheduling for wire techs are key issues at the bargaining table. Last week, CWA released a report, "Wiring Failure: How Low Pay and Overwork Undermine AT&T Technicians and Customers," which exposes how AT&T is driving away its experienced and skilled technicians with low pay and abusive job practices, making it harder for customers to get the high-quality service they deserve."

Apple Agrees to First US Labor Deal 

"Apple and the union representing retail workers at its store in Towson, Maryland, agreed to a tentative labor deal late Friday in the first US labor agreement not only for an Apple store but for any US workers of the tech giant."

Department of Labor Recovers $1.5M in Back Wages, Damages from Dallas-based HVAC Company

"An investigation by the department’s Wage and Hour Division found that C&G HVAC LLC deprived 430 technicians of their “rights, protections and benefits” by classifying the workers as independent contractors, according to a department news release. The Dallas company, the release said, owed technicians more than $756,000 in unpaid overtime wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages."

Illinois Bans Companies from Forcing Workers to Listen to Their Anti-Union Talk 

"Illinois has become the latest state to adopt legislation aimed at protecting workers from their employers' anti-union messaging. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, signed the bill into law on Wednesday, joining a wave of other states that have enacted similar laws over the past couple years as union organizing has surged."

Project 2025 Would Exploit Child Labor by Allowing Minors to Work in Dangerous Condition with Fewer Protections 

"The elimination of protections for young workers, if enacted, would lead more children to work in dangerous workplaces such as factories and slaughterhouses—as well as increase the likelihood of injuries and death—to the benefit of greedy corporations."

Arizona Workers at Titus Transportation Demand Union Recognition 

“Workers at Titus Transport, a third-party logistics (3PL) delivery provider for Kroger in Arizona, are demanding representation with Teamsters Local 104 in Phoenix amid concerns over the company’s labor practices and the proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger. The organizing campaign at Titus has garnered majority support among the 120 drivers, who have stood strong for nearly eight months in the face of an intense union-busting campaign by management."

Arizona Supreme Court Ruling to Change How Cities Deal with Unions 

"A new ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court could undermine agreements that Arizona cities have with their labor unions. In a unanimous decision, the justices said the contract Phoenix negotiated with one of its unions illegally gives away city resources because it allows employees to work on union issues on city time while being paid. The court said there was no evidence the cost to taxpayers was in any way commensurate with the benefits they got."

Summer Blockbuster Movies are Rarely Shot in Arizona Anymore. Is It the New Norm? 

“Many states have lucrative film tax incentives that attract big production companies to their sites. Arizona's previous tax program fell by the wayside in 2010, but a new initiative, the Arizona Motion Picture Production Program, went into effect on Jan. 1, 2023, that reinstated film tax credits under certain criteria."
