Friend, over the last several years, children across the globe have felt the brunt of devastating climate disasters and humanitarian emergencies – earthquakes, threats of famine, wars and displacement. Despite the number of crises unfolding year after year, UNICEF is there.
Just last year, UNICEF responded to 412 crises in 107 countries, including internal conflicts, disasters, disease outbreaks and more.
In responding to so many emergencies, it’s important to pause, reflect and acknowledge the real impact that people like you are helping UNICEF make for children. Here are a few stories that give us hope:
Update: In September 2023, an earthquake struck the western side of Morocco, destroying schools and homes. UNICEF has been working to bring students back to the classroom. Today, more children in Morocco are learning again.
Update: In the summer of 2022, floods in Pakistan destroyed schools, homes and clinics, leaving millions homeless and out of school. UNICEF and partners re-built a transitional school structure to get children back in school, like 13-year-old Naseem.
Update: In February 2023, two devastating earthquakes struck Türkiye and Syria, displacing 3 million people. Immediately after, UNICEF responded to meet families' needs. Today, at UNICEF-supported hubs, young children are learning to address peer bullying and protect their mental health.
Update: Since 2021, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia have been facing extreme drought, causing the displacement of more than 2.5 million people. Jimco (right, in green hijab) and children like her can feel safe and enjoy their childhoods in UNICEF-supported child-friendly spaces.
Often, when emergencies like these arise, news coverage arrives quickly but the headlines soon fade — leaving children without the attention they need in the face of crisis. In emergency situations, UNICEF provides both urgent relief and long-lasting assistance for children and their families.
With your support, UNICEF is always ready to respond to crises — reaching children with the access to education, nutrition and safe water they need to survive and thrive.
