Yesterday, I came back to Washington to do two important things.

1. I voted for a new relief package with an additional $480 billion in relief money that will support small businesses, hospitals, and a direly needed national testing strategy.

2. I helped create a House Select Committee to oversee the trillions of dollars of relief aid Congress has approved in the wake of COVID-19. Given the Trump administration’s persistent record of corruption and mismanagement, this oversight is crucial.

However, our work is far from done. To secure our democracy, we must take action to expand vote-by-mail. We need to provide relief for state, local, and tribal governments who are dealing with falling revenue while their spending is skyrocketing to fight COVID-19.

It’s our moral responsibility to give health care coverage to the 26 million Americans who have already lost their jobs and guarantee hazard pay for all frontline workers who are doing the heroic work to keep our society moving each and every day.

Additionally, we need to ensure that the Small Business Association (SBA) prioritizes legitimate small businesses, non-profit organizations, the self-employed, and microbusinesses. Struggling small businesses need flexibility in these loan packages to pay for necessary costs like rent — especially those in high rent areas.

It’s appalling that the SBA had undermined the will of Congress by not providing enough flexibility, and giving Economic Injury Disaster Loan Emergency Advance loans that total far below the number we intended when we passed the CARES Act.

All of these measures are bigger than politics; they get to the heart of who we are as Americans. If we don’t give folks the option of vote-by-mail, people could have to choose between risking their safety and exercising their fundamental right to vote.

Allowing state, local, and tribal governments to go bankrupt when we have the means to help them avoid it would cause deep pain and necessitate cruel cuts.

Our frontline workers deserve to be compensated for risking their lives. And, what kind of country are we if we let the millions of Americans who lost their jobs suffer without health care? We’re in this together,
