[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Friends,

Like many of you, I was alarmed by last month’s Supreme Court ruling that the President is functionally immune from legal accountability for their actions, even when they violate federal law.

That’s why today, alongside Majority Leader Schumer and 33 other Democrats in the Senate, I introduced the No Kings Act.

There are three main pieces to the bill that together make it clear that Presidents who commit crimes while in office must be held accountable.

First, it reaffirms that Presidents and Vice Presidents do not have immunity from actions that violate U.S. law.

Second — and this is important — it removes the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction to challenge this bill. Because we know the MAGA Majority Supreme Court would likely overturn this law to protect Trump as soon as they have the chance.

Third, it establishes additional jurisdiction and procedures for bringing criminal action against the President and Vice President.

We must clarify that Congress, not the Supreme Court, determines who is subject to federal laws — and that the President is included.

But we know republicans are going to fight this bill tooth-and-nail. They’d rather give Donald Trump carte blanche to commit crimes than to hold him accountable for his actions.

That’s why I’m asking for your support: to help demonstrate that the American people overwhelmingly believe that in the United States, nobody is above the law.
