Dear Friends,

I wanted to update you on some of my recent work in Washington, D.C. and the district that may be of help to you.

At home in New Haven last month, I was happy to join Congressman Joe Courtney and the team at the Friends Center for Children to see the progress they have made on their recent expansion. The new additions to the building will accommodate an additional 80 toddlers, build a new library, playgrounds and green spaces, as well as providing jobs and housing for teachers. This last year, I was able to award the Friends Center for Children with $4,000,000 for this project, and I cannot wait to see it open to the community! Infrastructure investments like this one make child care more accessible and affordable for families.

This month, I was also able to award $1.6 million that I secured for the Greater New Haven Boys & Girls Club – this funding will make it possible to renovate the facility and improve the safety, accessibility, and quality of the great services they provide to the community.

I teamed up with Congressman Courtney again, as well as New Haven Mayor Elicker, State Representative Toni Walker, and Guilford First Selectman Matt Hoey to welcome the Workforce Alliance back to New Haven, at a ribbon-cutting of their reopened job center. This new facility will bolster our local economy by helping workers find jobs and developing the extensive talent within our community.

I also joined Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, Department of Consumer Protection Deputy Commissioner Shirley Skyers-Thomas, and Connecticut Food Association President Wayne Pesce at Nica’s Market in New Haven to discuss initiatives aimed at lowering food costs for hardworking Americans by making everyday necessities more affordable and accessible.

In Washington, I continued to lead Democrats through several Appropriations Committee markups, where I fought to protect crucial funding for programs that directly support nutrition, national security, and human rights.

You can read my statements at each Full Committee hearing below:

I took to the House floor to continue to defend the funding that the President and Democrats have fought for. You can read my statements from the House floor below:

Between markups, I was able to meet with Brett Thompson, Executive Director of Connecticut Arts Alliance, Adriane Jefferson, the Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of New Haven, and the talented Carrie Tillis, who presented her artwork detailing our beautiful state. We spoke about the vital role the arts play in our community, something I will forever appreciate and fight to protect.

For over 20 years, the Veterans History Project (VHP) has been dedicated to recording and sharing first-hand narratives of our nation’s veterans. This outlet is incredibly important, both for the veterans who have stories to share as well as current and future generations that will learn from them. Connecticut’s own veterans and Gold Star Family members can share meaningful lessons through video, audio, or text-based recording. To hear more about how to contribute to this historic project, please click here where I further explain the background and history of VHP.

In Case You Missed It (ICYMI): While watching the Summer Olympics in Paris, you may recognize a few familiar faces. Congratulations and good luck to the Third District’s own, including Alyssa Naeher of Stratford (Women’s Soccer) and Alexis Holmes of Hamden (Women’s 400m, Women’s 4x400m Relay). Go Team USA!

I will continue my efforts in Congress to get results for the families and communities of the Third District. Should you have any questions or if I can assist you with a federal agency, please contact my District office at 203-562-3718.
