Californians: 

Thank Governor Newsom for signing the SAFETY Act into law! The SAFETY Act is the first law in the country to ban harmful forced outing policies in schools. Send the Governor a thank you for protecting LGBTQ+ kids!

State Matters

California - School board members recalled after Pride flag ban. Two members of the Sunol Glen Unified School District in the East Bay were successfully recalled after they voted to ban schools from flying Pride flags. 

Florida - Broward County school employee suspended for violating state’s anti-trans athlete ban. The employee was suspended for 10 days without pay after she supported her trans daughter and let her play on the girls’ volleyball team. 

Virginia - Former employee sues Liberty University, claiming employment discrimination. The suit alleges Ellenor Zinski was fired from her IT job at the University after she came out as trans.

Court Matters

President Biden proposes Supreme Court reforms. The proposed reforms include a Constitutional amendment rejecting presidential immunity for crimes committed while in office, term limits for Supreme Court justices, as well as a binding code of conduct for Supreme Court justices.

Federal Matters

New Title IX rules go into effect in 24 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. On August 1st, new Title IX rules which explicitly protect LGBTQ+ youth from harassment and discrimination in schools by prohibiting sex discrimination went into effect in the 24 states in which the rule hasn’t been blocked by federal courts. PFLAG National strongly supports the rule.

Global Matters

India - Home Ministry directs prisons to protect trans inmates. The ministry sent state and territorial officials a letter asking them to ensure all LGBTQ+ incarcerated individuals receive equal treatment, and to protect them from discrimination.

Media Matters

U.S. Olympic women’s rugby team wins bronze medal. The team includes six openly LGBTQ+ players who helped the U.S. win its first Olympic medal for rugby since 1924. 

Malaysian music festival sues The 1975 after band members share onstage kiss. Frontman Matt Healy and bassist Ross MacDonald kissed on stage at Malaysia’s Good Vibes music festival in protest of the country’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws, causing the festival to be shut down. The festival is suing the band for $2.4 million.
