Free Markets, Not a New "Link Tax" Best Way To Preserve California Journalism

One of the most contentious issues at the end of the legislative session is the so-called “California Journalism Preservation Act” (Assembly Bill 886 ([link removed]) , by Asm. Buffy Wicks, D-Berkeley), which would require online platforms like Google and Meta (parent of Facebook) to pay for digital news content. Payments could be made either by a yet-to-be-determined annual lump sum or an amount negotiated with publishers.

Wildfires need more than money thrown at them to put the flames out

It has been an extraordinary year for California fires ([link removed]) . The Park Fire currently raging ([link removed]) as of this writing in Butte and Tehama Counties has destroyed nearly 300 homes and businesses and remains just 18 percent contained. More than 200,000 acres of have burned so far, well above the five-year average of about 39,000 acres burned through mid-July. With $2.9 billion budgeted through 2029 and an additional $200 million annually dedicated specifically to wildfire prevention, is more money the answer?

Boom town or bust? Developers postpone new-city plan

It sounded like a possible libertarian paradise: Get some investors and build your own city on acres of empty ranch land. Billionaire tech lords have been trying to do just that in Solano County, Calif., which lies between San Francisco and Sacramento. They qualified their California Forever initiative for a majority vote of county voters this Nov. 5.

But on July 22, California Forever surprisingly announced it was postponing the land-use change initiative to 2026.
