Dear Resident,

Now that the dust has begun to settle on the general election, I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who lent me their vote. Sadly, it was not to be and my time as the MP for Carlisle has come to an end.

Being the MP and representing you for the last fourteen years has been the honour of my life. I believe Carlisle has changed in a positive way and together we have delivered hundreds of millions of pounds of investment into our city. I see much work underway and look forward to seeing more results in the coming months.

I must thank my team, my supporters and everyone who has worked with me over the years. Without them I simply would not have been able to serve as your MP.

As far as national politics is concerned, the Conservative Party must reflect, understand and deal with the reasons why so many across the country felt unable to support it. I wish my successor well in Carlisle - it is a truly wonderful constituency to represent.

I shall now take the time to reflect on my future and enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I thank them as without their unwavering support, I could not have done this job for the last fourteen years.

What I do know is that 25 years of public service in Carlisle will not end here and I shall watch with much interest the new Labour Government and developments here in Carlisle. We must make sure there are no backward steps.
