It's back-to-school season, and that means it's time for a lesson—yes, even for you! As a former teacher, I’m putting my educator hat back on to share some important numbers. But if you take away just one thing from this email, let it be this: Vote NO on Amendment 2!
Amendment 2 threatens to undermine our public school system by diverting crucial funds to unaccountable private schools. This amendment, if passed, would widen the geographic, income, and racial divides that already strain our communities.
In Kentucky, over 60% of counties lack certified private schools, meaning our rural communities—and the students who call them home—will be hardest hit. Public schools are often the largest employers in these areas, remaining an engine for local economies. Amendment 2 would drain these schools of essential funding, creating financial chaos while also hurting our kids.
For other states that have gone down this dangerous path, between 65% to 90% of voucher costs now subsidize families already sending their children to private schools—families with incomes 54% higher than those in public school households. This is a giveaway to the wealthiest, leaving the majority of students, particularly those in rural and low-income areas, with fewer resources and opportunities.
We cannot afford to let this happen in Kentucky. Public dollars belong in public schools, where they can support every student. By defeating Amendment 2, we will ensure that our state continues to provide an equitable, quality education to all children—regardless of their ZIP code.
