John,
I wanted to be sure you saw Alex’s message. With Donald Trump watching his poll numbers plummet, he’s flailing. He’s just proposed an idea that sounds good, but that he would execute in a way that poses an existential threat to Social Security.
We agree that taxes on Social Security benefits should be improved. But by proposing to eliminate a portion of Social Security's dedicated funding without providing any alternative funding sources, Trump would hasten the across-the-board cuts that automatically occur if Social Security's trust fund is exhausted.
Trump spent his presidency proposing cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid in every single one of his budgets. He temporarily defunded Social Security entirely. Democrats propose to keep Social Security strong forever by making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share, while Trump is doing everything he can to hasten its ruin.

John,
Though it was overshadowed by Donald Trump’s weird performance of racism at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention, Trump made a big policy announcement yesterday.
Over on Truth Social, Trump tweeted “SENIORS SHOULD NOT PAY TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY!” For once, he may have been on to something. But as usual, even his better ideas won’t be implemented well.
Democrats have proposed addressing the taxation of benefits for over a decade, as part of their effort to expand Social Security, while restoring it to long-range actuarial balance by requiring the uber-wealthy to pay their fair share.
But that’s not Trump’s plan. He’d simply eliminate 4% of Social Security’s dedicated funding with no plan to replace it―draining the trust fund and making a 20% across-the-board benefit cut more likely.
Democrats have plans to improve and expand our Social Security system. Donald Trump has a tweet. We’re making sure seniors know the difference. Make a donation today!

Just a few of the many other important expansions Democrats want to enact are:
-
An across-the-board increase for all current and future beneficiaries;
-
A more accurate cost-of-living adjustment so benefits don’t erode due to inflation;
-
A caregiver credit in recognition of the invaluable work that family caregivers provide;
-
The repeal of two provisions known as WEP/GPO, which reduce the benefits of too many of the nation’s public school teachers, firefighters, and police officers.
The Democrats propose to pay for their Social Security expansions by requiring millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. Donald Trump wants to cut the ultra-wealthy’s taxes even further.
This is the choice: Do we let Social Security benefits face an across-the-board 20% cut in a decade? Or do we make the wealthy pay their fair share and strengthen our Social Security system for the long term?

Thank you,
Alex Lawson
