A Message from Gabe:

Greetings Rhode Islanders,

As the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are underway, our nation is coming together to celebrate the remarkable athletes and coaches representing our country — and Rhode Island — on the world stage. Their dedication, perseverance, and exceptional talents embody the “hope”-ful spirit of our state. Let's take a moment to highlight their achievements and cheer them on as they strive for gold!

Stu McNay, a sailor from Providence, brings his expertise and experience to Team USA sailing as he competes in his 5th Olympic Games. I am excited to see Stu navigate the waters in Paris!

Emily Sisson, a Providence College alum, is a long-distance runner competing in the marathon. Emily’s dedication and endurance have been key to her success, and I will be cheering her on as she races for gold!

Emily Kallfelz, from Jamestown, has made waves for USA rowing with her exceptional skills and dedication. Emily helped Team USA place fifth in the women’s four race!

Coach Tammi Reiss, an assistant coach for the U.S. 3x3 women's basketball team, brings her expertise and strategic insight to the team. As the University of Rhode Island Rams' women's basketball head coach, Coach Reiss’ leadership is crucial to guiding Team USA!

I hope you’re able to tune in to support our local athletes and coaches as they compete and represent our country in Paris. Making it this far to the Olympics is a massive feat itself. Their accomplishments bring great pride to the Ocean State, so let’s cheer them on!

Go Team USA!

Sincerely,

President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris are stepping up efforts to combat the fentanyl, opioid, and synthetic drug crisis.

These actions focus on enhancing border detection; increasing access to naloxone, a critical medication used to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose; and investing in treatment initiatives.

Additionally, a new National Security Memorandum aims to improve intelligence sharing and coordination across federal agencies.

The administration’s actions will help our country overcome the ongoing struggles with opioid addiction and overdose deaths. These efforts can save lives by reducing the availability of dangerous drugs. Additionally, investments in treatment programs can provide crucial support for individuals seeking recovery.

This week, President Biden announced his plan to increase accountability and enact bold reforms at the Supreme Court.

The proposal would set 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices, establish a code of conduct to uphold the same ethical standards required of other federal judges, and ensure former presidents can be prosecuted for crimes committed while in office.

I support President Biden's reforms and am a proud cosponsor of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, & Transparency Act because it’s time to restore trust once against in our judicial system.

Encouraging Support of Federal Funding to Combat Global Malnutrition

Image

Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a proven treatment against famine and acute malnutrition around the world.

This week, I led a letter to the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) advocating for federal funding for Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to combat global malnutrition. RUTF is one of the most effective treatments for severe wasting. The letter, supported by our Rhode Island delegation, highlights the need to use funds from the $9 billion in humanitarian assistance provided by the recently passed national security supplemental package to address acute malnutrition in Gaza, Sudan, and other regions throughout the world.

Together, we are highlighting the critical role USAID plays in supporting domestic nonprofits like Edesia Nutrition in Rhode Island, a key producer of RUTF, in treating children suffering from severe malnutrition. Continued USAID funding is essential for these producers to keep delivering lifesaving nutrition to those in need around the world.
