“If the US Postal Service fails, rural America will suffer the most”

During this time of social distancing, I know I’ve been relying more than ever on regular old mail to connect with loved ones.

Sending and receiving a birthday card, a postcard, or just a note to say hi is so meaningful, especially during this time when we can’t physically be with each other.

Here in rural America, communication is a lifeline that cannot be severed. Services like FedEx and UPS charge higher rates for delivery than the United States Postal Service, and don’t always go the extra few miles into rural areas. USPS goes everywhere. That’s why we need to support the USPS and our postal workers.

Mail traffic is down, slashing revenues significantly. Combined with absurd provisions that the USPS must account TODAY for the health benefits of retirees 75 YEARS into the future, the USPS is in financial trouble -- and the Trump administration is not putting forward realistic plans to save one of the oldest and most important government institutions enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

USPS is the 2nd biggest employer in the country, employing over 600,000 workers. These postal workers are on the front lines of this crisis -- sorting and delivering mail and packages when it’s a high-risk time to be working. They are responsible for bringing people their medicine, paychecks, and so much more. Not to mention the vital role they play in safeguarding our democracy -- without ways to securely receive and send ballots, we cannot have safe and secure elections.

We must protect the USPS -- postal services are vital to our communication, our health, our education, our small businesses, our democracy, and more.

You’d think we could count on Steve King for help on this issue -- since his one and only bill passed into law in 18 years was renaming a post office. But he’s nowhere to be found, while his rural constituents might lose one of their most essential services.

We need to press Congress to take action to protect the postal service: It is essential and life-saving, and without it, so many people would suffer.

As stimulus bills are passed in the midst of this pandemic, we need to make sure there is relief built-in for the USPS. We can’t let President Trump’s personal vendettas against CEOs and entire government agencies get in the way of our regular mail deliveries.

So join me in demanding action from Congress to make sure the USPS gets life-saving funding. We can’t lose their work and services -- not now, not ever
