Welcome to the second MenEngage Africa newsletter of 2024! We are glad to present you with the most recent developments within the alliance in the second quarter of 2024. In this release, we will highlight several important events, including the Online MenEngage Africa Training Initiative (MATI2024), MenEngage eSwatini advocacy at the Bushfire Festival, and Advancing SRHR-Transformative Workshops in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Malawi. ** The 2nd MenEngage Africa SRHR Symposium is Coming soon! ([link removed])

The 2nd installment of MenEngage Africa's (MEA) Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Learning and Exchange Symposium is due to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 12th - 14th of August 2024. The symposium will foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and action towards achieving comprehensive sexuality education, safe abortion, and youth-friendly services. This symposium aligns with the objectives outlined in the MEA SRHR Strategic Plan (2023-2027) and focuses on the LINK, LEARN, IMPROVE, and INFLUENCE approach. Sexual and reproductive health and rights are crucial for human well-being, gender equality, and social development.

** Hybrid #MATI2024 on “Gender Peace and Security,’ Ongoing ... ([link removed])

The MenEngage Africa and Women International League for Peace and Freedom Training Institute dubbed #MATI2024 on ‘Peace and Security,’ is ongoing from 1-31st July online and 12-16th August onsite in Nairobi, Kenya. This training will introduce participants to learnings around conflict, gender and peacebuilding, the international human rights frameworks to advance the Women, Peace and Security agenda, the links between structural drivers of violence and militarized masculinities, the role of male allies in achieving feminist peace, and the opportunities for joint advocacy for feminist peace in Africa.

** "Advancing SRHR- Sonke Gender Justice's Transformative Workshops in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Malawi" ([link removed])

MenEngage Africa Secretariat, Sonke Gender Justice has successfully concluded a series of training workshops aimed at empowering partners and strengthening their capacity in various thematic areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). These sessions were conducted in Ethiopia, Uganda, and Malawi for MenEngage Africa partners. The training initiative was informed by the pressing need to address gaps in SRHR education and services in the region. Recognising the critical role of comprehensive sexuality education and access to contraceptives in promoting gender equality and health, the trainings were designed to equip participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively promote CSE and access to contraceptives in their communities, schools, and organisations.

** Introducing Peace Namayanja, a new member of the MenEngage Africa steering committee
------------------------------------------------------------
Peace is the Partnership and Impact Manager at Girls Not Brides within the Africa Team. She provides technical support to Africa's national Partnerships, coalitions, and movements working to address child marriage. This includes capacity strengthening and enhancing movement-building to showcase impact at the national level in Africa.

Peace is a women and children's rights activist with over 10 years of working experience in public policy, sexual reproductive health and rights, evidence-based advocacy, institutional strengthening, media engagements, child protection, partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation. Her passion for advocating for gender equality, equity, and representation fuels her aim of creating equal opportunities for men, women, girls, and boys to develop their untapped abilities and leverage their skills to make a larger impact in Africa.

Her impeccable experience in coordination, partnerships, and movement building fuels her capacity for deeper involvement in national and regional campaigns aimed at advancing gender equality.

Peace holds a bachelor’s in social sciences and a master’s in research and public policy. She is an alumnus member of the Commonwealth Youth Gender Equality Network (CYGEN).


** MenEngage eSwatini takes advocacy to Bushfire Festival! ([link removed])

The MenEngage Eswatini, in collaboration with the In-country Secretariat Health Plus 4 Men, organised and executed an advocacy stall at the annual Bushfire Festival, a popular cultural event that took place from May 31 to June 2, 2024, in Manzini, eSwatini. The objective of the advocacy stall was to actively involve festival attendees in discussions surrounding critical issues such as HIV, the inclusion of key populations, and the pressing matter of human trafficking, particularly examining how these issues intersect and impact one another. These engagements were intentionally centered around the Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on ensuring good health and well-being for all individuals within communities.

** Gender Transformative Approach Training for MenEngage Cameroon Partners ([link removed])

MenEngage Cameroon now has a Gender Transformative Approach -GTA community of practice which seeks to monitor the mainstreaming of GTA in programming within the country network and member organisations. This is an outcome of the GTA capacity building facilitated by Sonke Gender Justice from the 26-28th June 2024 at Reach Out Head Office, Cameroon.

** MenEngage Nigeria Youth attends 2024 Nigeria HIV Prevention Conference ([link removed])

On May 7, 2024, MenEngage Nigeria Youth Wing attended the Nigeria HIV Prevention Conference themed “Adolescents and Young People as Change Agents” at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.

The 2024 Nigeria HIV Prevention Conference, organised by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Health, and the National Agency for AIDS Control (NACA), sought to highlight current difficulties and stimulate debates about new solutions and community involvement, which are critical in the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
