*Maine is slipping further away from the American Dream*
"We cannot continue to ignore the plight of older Mainers and people living on the margins"
"?"
This is Representative Tom Lavigne of Berwick with the Weekly Republican Address.?
Not too long ago, the American Dream was in reach for most Americans, especially Mainers.
With a strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, citizenship, and commitment you could achieve a comfortable standard of living.
You could raise a family, plan for the future, or retire comfortably.
Home ownership was achievable for nearly everyone with a decent paying job.?
Just four years ago?
* Gas was $1.80 a gallon, not the current 3 dollars and forty-seven cents.
* Groceries were 20% cheaper
* Rents were substantially lower
* Our electric bills were half what they are today.
Now in 2024 Maine is no longer affordable for people with above average incomes and it is tight for many in the shrinking middle class.
The most recent example of how things have gone terribly wrong is Maine?s housing market.
This past spring, the median price of a home sold in May hit $419,300 ? an all-time record.
Last year, the median price was $385,000.
The market for starter homes has dried up, becoming unaffordable for a young couple with two good paying jobs.
That means that the Governor?s stated goal of attracting 75,000 ?new Mainers? is a farce.
In another sign of how bad things have gotten for average Mainers? sales at the McDonald?s fast food chain fell for the first time since 2020 due to high prices.
If a working family cannot afford to eat at McDonald?s, what does that say about the condition of all Maine restaurants?
Not long ago, the United States had the best economy in our lifetime.
Now we are a nation and state in decline.
It used to be easier for people of average means to realize the American Dream here in Maine.
Contrary to what those in charge say,
IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY
Don?t settle for a lower quality of life.
When you see your local legislators, ask them if they supported the Republican bills to lower energy costs.
Ask them if they supported Republican proposals to let them keep more of what they earn.
Life today is not the ?new normal.?
We should reject that notion.
There is a better way?. The Republican way!
