President Biden negotiated a huge diplomatic victory yesterday, securing the historic release of three imprisoned Americans being held in Russia, and the disgraced ex-president was predictably furious about the entire affair. Why? Because Trump had claimed time and time again that only he, with his incredible strength and bigly diplomatic skills, could bring Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table and secure their freedom. In fact, Trump was using the then-hypothetical release of political prisoners in Russia as a bargaining chip to weasel his way back into office, telling voters that Putin would release the Americans as soon as he won back the presidency. Nowhere in Trump's statement, it should be noted, was there any congratulatory message to the released Americans themselves or their families. Why? Because in Trump's world they were merely political pawns, and thanks to President Biden, they are now safely off the board AND back home with their families where they belong.

JD Vance doubles down on defense of Trump amid racist "turn Black" controversy

Biden, Harris welcome home Americans released in historic Russia prisoner swap
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris greeted three Americans released by Russia in a historic and complex prisoner swap involving 24 people being held in six countries when they arrived on US soil late Thursday. A plane carrying Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Marine veteran Paul Whelan, and Russian-American radio journalist Alsu Kurmasheva landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after they were freed as part of the swap that also involved Germany, Slovenia, Poland and Norway. As part of the deal, Russia released 16 prisoners while the Western countries released eight Russians. The prisoners were traded on a tarmac in Ankara, Turkey, earlier Thursday.

Vice President Kamala Harris announced one of the strongest fundraising months in presidential history, raising $310 million in July and entering August with $377 million cash on hand. That's just a wee bit more than the $139 million Trump raised last month, but the MAGA cult leader's campaign still has $327 million in the bank. Senate Republicans kill major tax bill that would expand Child Tax Credit
A major tax package that would bolster the popular Child Tax Credit and cut taxes for businesses failed to advance in the Senate on Thursday in the face of widespread Republican opposition, despite clearing the House by wide bipartisan margins earlier this year. Known as the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, the legislation would have expanded the Child Tax Credit to provide relief to lower-income families. Though it's more modest than a pandemic-era enhancement of the credit, which greatly reduced child poverty and ended in 2021, it could still lift roughly half a million children out of poverty, which is clearly a nonstarter for Senate Republicans.
