Are We Worthy?

As I write I am sitting in Gettysburg, PA.  I have spent the day in the Civil War battlefield that surrounds this town and at the cemetery just within town where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous address.  I was served by two great guides – one an old friend that came down from the War College at Carlisle and helped me to understand, far better than any of the interpretive materials around could have, the three days of that battle.  The casualty numbers are staggering.  The other guide was a docent in the cemetery that we merely happened upon.  That docent recited, in a well-practiced and deeply evocative voice, the address.  I did not think I could be more moved than when I heard Taps at the American Cemetery in Normandy, but this guy managed to do it.  As I listened to...
