### **Assassination Complete: Hamas Leader is Dead**
In a striking development reported from Tehran, Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard confirmed the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, though the perpetrators of the attack remain unidentified. The assassination quickly drew speculative accusations towards Israel, following its vow to target Hamas leadership in retaliation for the deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and the abduction of approximately 250 individuals, as per the Associated Press.
Haniyeh was in Tehran attending the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, an event marked by anti-Western sentiments, notably with chants of "Death to America, Israel." The day prior, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had met with Haniyeh, as announced on the social media platform X, signaling significant political engagements.

The Israeli government has maintained its usual silence on such matters, consistent with its policy regarding operations speculated to be linked to its Mossad intelligence agency.
Lisa Daftari, a Middle East analyst and editor-in-chief at The Foreign Desk, commented on the implications of the assassination, noting, "The fact that such a high-ranking Hamas leader was assassinated on Iranian soil was an added bonus for Israel particularly directly after he participated in the inauguration ceremony of the new Islamic Republic president." She added, "It sends a clear message that Israel does not differentiate between the Islamic Republic and its proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah."
