The political shifts we are seeing right now are a testament to the Pro-Palestine peace movement’s power. Your advocacy is moving the needle, and with the Democratic National Convention just around the corner, our duty to mobilize for Gaza has never been greater. Over the past weeks, we’ve seen Vice President Kamala Harris being portrayed as more sympathetic to Palestinians than Joe Biden. But in reality she repeats so many of the same anti-Palestinian talking points and hasn’t done anything to move us towards a ceasefire. Now that the spotlight is on her, it’s time to use our momentum and put pressure on the VP!

This week, nine Israeli occupation soldiers were arrested for raping a Palestinian political prisoner, and the Israeli “Knesset” (legislature) responded with a debate about whether or not it is legitimate for Israeli soldiers to rape Palestinians. Under Israeli occupation, the systematic dehumanization of Palestinians is the norm. There is no time to delay — Israel must be held accountable on an international scale immediately. There is absolutely no reason for the U.S. to continue to arm Israel, and Americans have been demanding a ceasefire and arms embargo for months now.

Despite the extensive list of crimes against women and children the Israeli military has committed under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, Harris condemned recent protests in D.C. opposing Netanyahu’s visit, affirming her alignment with Biden’s policies on Israel. She characterized the protests as anti-semitic, refusing to acknowledge the diverse demands among protesters, including protecting Palestinian women from sexual abuse by Israeli soldiers and ensuring reliable access to reproductive care. If Harris considers herself a feminist, she would advocate for the women of Gaza who have been using tent scraps as makeshift pads for months now. She would be concerned about the billions of dollars in unconditional aid the U.S. sends to Israel to bomb healthcare facilities for pregnant women. Harris does not care about Palestinian women, and supporting their genocide is the antithesis of feminism.

Our collective pressure is making support for Zionism politically untenable, and we must continue to push Vice President Harris to stand up to Israel’s brutality. Those of us in the U.S. have a massive opportunity to do so in two weeks at the Democratic National Convention.
