The right-wing Supreme Court majority recently approved a big power grab by corporate special interests. This means that big companies now have more power to influence important rules about our environment, food safety, and workplace protections.
In a moment, we'll explain why this is such a big deal. But while we have your attention, we would appreciate it if you could add your name to our petition telling Congress to pass the Stop Corporate Capture Act (SCCA), which aims to fight back against power-hungry corporations.
For 40 years, there was a rule called Chevron deference that let teams of nonpartisan experts and federal agencies, like the Environmental Protection Agency, decide how to best enforce laws. This made sure that experts, not judges or politicians, were making decisions about things like clean air and safe working conditions that affect all of us.
But now, the Supreme Court has gotten rid of this rule and opened the door for Donald Trump's Project 25 to replace nonpartisan experts with MAGA loyalists.
So, for example, if Donald Trump wanted to fire all climate scientists and put his sons in charge of handling our energy sector, he could do it in a snap.
This is downright dangerous.
But there is hope: the SCCA would reinforce the Chevon deference, empower regulators with no political agenda, and hold corporations accountable when they try to deceive the public.
