The United States Supreme Court has dominated the news cycle this year, with countless stories of the justices’ blatant biases and ethical violations. Recently, it was revealed that some of the sitting justices have accepted lavish and unreported gifts from parties with interests before the court. The rampant shady dealings threaten public trust in the highest court in the country, and we need to take action now.
Progressive champions Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamie Raskin have introduced the High Court Gift Ban Act in hopes of combating corruption and promoting transparency in the SCOTUS.The legislation would prohibit Supreme Court justices from receiving gifts valued over $50, with a combined limit of $100 annually.
