THE SCOREBOARD

Deep dive into what election certification will look like in November

  • Election certification has become a pervasive concern heading into November given former President Donald Trump and his sycophants' refusal to accept election results in the past. But what exactly happens when rogue election officials refuse to certify results? Find out here.

  • With less than 100 days to go, Republicans are laying the groundwork to subvert the 2024 election. But this isn't a new threat. In a new piece, Marc explains how the GOP plans to abuse the election certification process.

U.S. Senate passes bipartisan bill to create 63 new federal judgeships

  • The Senate unanimously passed a bill to create over 60 new district court judgeships across the country to help ease overloaded dockets. The bipartisan bill now heads to the House.

  • Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), a co-sponsor of the bill, said, “Delaware has some of America's most overworked federal judges — and for nearly 14 years, I’ve been trying to get them help.” He added, “we’re a step closer to that goal” now that the legislation passed the Senate.

Another lawsuit filed against Biden’s voting rights executive order

  • Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft (R) filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging President Joe Biden’s 2021 executive order promoting voter registration.

  • This is not the first case brought this year against this executive order. Last month, a right-wing legal group, Texas legislators and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) sued the Biden administration, and in January, Pennsylvania GOP legislators filed a lawsuit of their own.

Victory for voters in Wisconsin

  • In a win for voters, a Wisconsin judge rejected the GOP Legislature's request to block a ruling that allows voters with disabilities to request and receive accessible absentee ballots via email. The pro-voting ruling will remain in effect.

The latest on a Mississippi redistricting case

  • The trial starts on Monday in a lawsuit that challenged Mississippi's decades-old electoral map for the state Supreme Court. Voters argue that the districts dilute the voting power of Black Mississippians in a state where they comprise 40% of the population.

Update on Pennsylvania misdated and undated mail-in ballot case

  • A Pennsylvania court held a hearing today in a challenge to a state election law that disqualifies mail-in ballots with incorrect or missing dates on the outer envelope. Pro-voting groups argue the law violates the state constitution.

  • Pro-voting groups allege that this law has led to the disqualification of over 10,000 mail-in ballots since the 2022 election. The results of the case will have major implications for the election this fall.
